[Verse 1]
Rejoice! for Jesus is the King,
Rejoice! the Lord of lords proclaim;
Rejoice in life to sinners giv'n,
Redeemed through His most holy name.
Rejoice and bless the Great I AM,
Who gave His Son in love for us;
Hallelujah! Lift your voice,
And praise His name in glorious trust.
[Verse 2]
O let the world now plainly know
What hidden darkness fills the heart;
For cruel thoughts and bitter streams
From fallen nature still depart.
The wicked reap their grief and shame,
Their portion is the path of pain.
For none can dwell with God above
Those who choose in sin and hate remain.
[Verse 3]
Before He kept the feast of love,
Our Lord had felt the coming night;
He saw the hour of grief draw near,
Yet walked in meekness toward the fight.
He ate the final meal with those
Who loved Him with a faithful flame;
He told them all that must befall,
And sorrow filled them at His name.
[Verse 4]
Then to Gethsemane He went,
Beneath the weight of grief and prayer;
He bore the shadow of the cross,
And drank the cup appointed there.
The weary disciples, overcome,
Could neither watch nor understand;
As though death's slumber sealed their eyes,
They slept beneath that heavy hand.
[Verse 5]
Then Judas came with armed men,
With elders gathered in the night;
And there began the cruel blows
Against the Lord of truth and light.
They struck the One who healed the sick,
They mocked the One who raised the dead;
He who had fed the souls of men
Was left with neither strength nor bread.
[Verse 6]
The tempter, blind in rage and pride,
Knew not the counsel from above;
He understood not Heaven's will,
Nor fathomed God's redeeming love.
Too late came sorrow, dark and deep,
Too late regret, too late the cry;
For once, the dreadful deed was done,
Its bitter fruit could never die.
[Verse 7]
My friend, the wisest course for all
Is to return to Christ our Lord,
To consecrate our hearts anew,
And gladly keep His holy word.
Let us obey with willing hearts,
Not dragged by fear, nor bound by force;
That when we stand in Heaven's light,
We'll find His mercy as our source.
[Verse 8]
Rejoice! for Christ has paid the price,
His precious blood was shed for men.
Rejoice! for through His sacrifice
The soul may rise to life again.
Bless now the everlasting God,
The Father full of grace untold;
Hallelujah! praise His name,
Whose love is more than Earth can hold.
