Let not confusion fill Thy Church,
O Father, pure and wise,
Thou art not One who speaks in dark,
Nor hides Thy truth in lies.
Thy Spirit gives His gifts by grace,
Not taught by fleshly art,
No man can force the heavenly flame,
Nor train another's heart.

O Holy Spirit, speak Thy truth,
Let flesh and falsehood cease,
Set all Thy Church in holy order,
And fill our hearts with peace.

When Holy Spirit truly comes,
The yielded tongue shall speak,
Not by pretence, nor empty sound,
But through the pure and meek.
The gift of tongues is not for all,
Let every soul take heed,
For gifts are given as Thou wilt,
According to Thy need.

If speech arise no man can know,
And none can make it plain,
Then folly stands before the Church,

But when Thy Spirit sends a word,
He brings the meaning near,
Or gives the tongue its holy light,
Or makes another hear.

O cleanse Thy Church from hypocrisy,
From pride and fleshly show,
