[Verse 1]
What trial hast thou borne, O soul distressed,
That Christ Himself hath not passed through?
He came to taste the cup of grief,
And proved His word forever true.
He calleth all the weary ones,
The burdened heart, the fainting breast;
"Come unto Me," the Saviour saith,
"And I shall give your spirit rest."
[Verse 2]
Take thou His yoke, and learn of Him,
The meek and lowly Lamb of God;
For light His burden, sweet His peace,
To all who tread the heavenly road.
Then turn away from grief and fear,
And fix thine eyes on Christ alone;
The Rock once smitten for thy sake,
The sure Foundation, Cornerstone.
[Verse 3]
A life without the Lord is death,
An empty path, a fleeting breath;
This world can yield no lasting hope,
Its glory ends in dust and death.
Look far beyond the things of Earth,
And onward press with steadfast eye;
Thy journey still is far ahead,
Press on, and let no courage die.
[Verse 4]
Give not thy foe the joy he seeks,
For he delights in human pain;
Stand firm in Christ through every storm,
And thou through Him shalt strength regain.
Our blessed Lord from Heaven came,
Though all the wealth of Heaven was His;
Yet here on Earth, He had no home,
No place of ease, no earthly bliss.
[Verse 5]
The hand of love sustained His need,
As God the Father had ordained;
And though He fed the souls of men,
Few cheered the heart that grief had pained.
Yet faithful women, moved by grace,
Did minister with willing hand;
Thus God remembers all His own,
And holds them by His kind command.
[Verse 6]
Then do not mourn for earthly things,
Nor let thy heart forget its goal;
For joy awaits the righteous ones,
A crown prepared for every soul.
Rejoice, for One doth watch o'er thee,
Though dark and lone thy path may seem;
In Jesus lies thy only hope,
Thy endless light, thy heavenly theme.
Amen.
